KENTUCKY DERBY 2015 Contenders: Lord Nelson nips Texas Red

Breeders’ Cup Juvenile winner Texas Red began his Kentucky Derby 2015 journey in the San Vicente at Santa Anita on Feb 2 and was rudely greeted in deep stretch by Lord Nelson.

Upstart

Holy Bull hero Upstart joins the Exceptional Eleven – photo by Eclipse Sportswire

The San Vicente was an extended sprint and nothing more than a starting point for Texas Red. He is expected to go next in the G2 Risen Star at Fair Grounds on Feb 21.

Three of my exceptional eleven Derby contenders are in action on Saturday, Feb 7. El Kabeir is the overwhelming favorite in the G3 Withers at the Big A, Dortmund is the choice in the G3 Robert Lewis Stakes at Santa Anita, and Souper Colossal goes in the Texas Glitter at Gulfstream.

Highly regarded, undefeated Blofeld has not had a published workout this year and drops off the list. Holy Bull hero Upstart is his replacement.

Graded Recaps

G2 Holy Bull (105 BSF): The fractions were tepid and Upstart sat a perfect outside tactical trip and got the jump on Frosted en route to an easy victory. Frosted was stuck inside for much of the race and was clearly second best.

Sam F. Davis (93 BSF): Ocean Knight ran his record to 2-for-2 in a neck victory over stubborn rival Divining Rod and it was five lengths back to show finisher My Johnny Be Good. We will learn more about these when they face saltier foes in the near future.

96 Rock (93 BSF): BC Juvenile 4th place finisher The Great War was much the best as the heavy favorite in this Polytrack sprint at Turfway.

G2 San Vicente (91 BSF): Lord Nelson edged BC Juvenile hero Texas Red in this extended sprint with no Derby points attached. Lord Nelson is now 3-for-3 around one turn and Texas Red was using this race as a prep for the G2 Risen Star.

Kentucky Derby 2015 Contenders: Carpe Diem New Number One

This is my December 2014 update and fourth in a series of blogs devoted to Kentucky Derby 2015 contenders. Once again, I am got an early start in September, and there will be many twists and turns in the weeks and months ahead.

Kentucky Derby 2015 logo

You will notice a few changes to the list. International Star is no longer the top dog. He drops to 7th after an even 4th in the Ky Jockey Club Stakes. Carpe Diem is the new Number 1.

Frosted is the big upward mover, going from 7th to 2nd after landing the place in the Remsen.

Chief Istan has been inactive since breaking his maiden at Delaware on Sept 3 and has been replaced by Dortmund.

Lord Nelson is 2-for-2 sprinting and 0-for-2 around two turns. His replacement is Imperia.

Graded Recaps

G2 Remsen (90 BSF): Leave the Light On (Chad Brown) rode the inside speed bias to victory over unlucky favorite Frosted. The latter broke from the outside post and was wide throughout in a fine effort. It was another 8 lengths back to show finisher Keen Ice.

G2 Kentucky Jockey Club (94): El Kabeir established the early lead and had just enough left in the tank to hold off Imperia. The latter was making his dirt debut for McLaughlin-Godolphin and seems to want more ground. Eagle, International Star, and Lord Nelson rounded out the top five finishers.

Video Race of the Week: G2 Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes

Saturday’s Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes is one of two Kentucky Derby 2015 preps. The other big juvenile event on November 29 is Aqueduct’s Grade II Remsen Stakes at nine furlongs.

In the Ky Jockey Club (11th race at Churchill Downs), Bob Baffert trains morning line favorite Lord Nelson. The promising son of late sire Pulpit is 2-for-3 lifetime with his lone setback a 4th place finish behind stablemate American Pharoah in the Grade I FrontRunner at Santa Anita Park.

El Kabeir invades from NY, removes the hood, and might be the one to catch. International Star drew favorably (PP 3) and gets pace to chase. All three of the aforementioned colts are part of my “Exceptional Eleven” Derby 2015 contender list.

Saturday’s written play at HorseRacingNation.com is the Grade II Remsen Stakes featuring Frosted.

Kentucky Derby 2015 Contenders: Delta Jackpot Video Preview

This is my November 2014 update and third in a series of blogs devoted to Kentucky Derby 2015 contenders. Once again, I got an early start in September, and there will be many twists and turns in the weeks and months ahead.

The early Derby 2015 prep of the week is the $1 Million Delta Jackpot and the morning line favorite is Mr. Z. The D. Wayne Lukas charge attended the pace before fading to 5th in the BC Juvenile last time.

Local Jackpot hopeful Golden Actor exits an easy win in the $200k Jean Lafitte. He is versatile and a strong race over the Delta oval is frequently a good angle.

Undefeated SoCal shipper Ocho Ocho Ocho might be the one to catch under Mike Smith.

Other Jackpot runners to keep an eye on are Jerry Hollendorfer’s Prime Engine, the speedy Conquest Tsunami, and 5-time SoCal winner Wake Up Nick.

Let’s rewind to the BC Juvenile. Texas Red ran out of his mind in a race that fell apart from a pace standpoint. He earned a 104 BSF in a facile score over Carpe Diem. I am not sure how strong the BC Juvenile was from top to bottom but I have always liked runner-up Carpe Diem. Texas Red still has to prove that he is for real and must overcome the Juvenile jinx.

Startup Nation drops off my list after back-to-back disappointing efforts. He is replaced by Texas Red.

Kentucky Derby 2015 Contenders: International Star retains top spot

This is my second in a series of blogs devoted to Kentucky Derby 2015 contenders. Once again, I got an early start in September, and there will be many twists and turns in the weeks and months ahead.

Kentucky Derby 2015 logo

Some of my highly regarded horses from the first September blog came back to run extremely well, including International Star, Blofeld, Carpe Diem, and American Pharoah.

Graded Recaps

G1 FrontRunner (101 BSF): In a virtual replay of the G1 Del Mar Futurity, American Pharoah was in complete control throughout. He is the deserving BC Juvenile favorite for Bob Baffert.

G1 Champagne (107 BSF): Daredevil was perfectly drawn on the outside and easily captured his second from as many wet track starts at Belmont Park. He clearly has talent and we will learn more when he faces quality foes on fast ground.

G1 Breeders’ Futurity (91 BSF): Carpe Diem dominated his eleven rivals for Johnny V-Pletcher. He is 2-for-2 lifetime and is a very promising prospect.

G3 Grey (66 BSF): International Star sat comfortably behind tepid splits before rallying nicely to win under a hand ride. The final number came back very low but the winner looked good from a visual standpoint.

G2 Futurity (100 BSF): Blofeld sat behind horses along the inside and won in a professional manner for Johnny V-Pletcher. This is exactly what you want to see in a young horse. Very promising colt.
