Beyond the Crown – Trinniberg, The Lumber Guy join list

My top ten active sophomores were busy during the 2-day Breeders’ Cup on Nov 2-3 and Unbridled’s Note produced the best effort with a runner-up finish in the BC Turf Sprint.

Trinniberg and The Lumber Guy join my list after finishing 1-2 in the BC Sprint. To make space for them, I dropped BC Dirt Mile also-ran Fed Biz and Summer Front.

Alpha loses the top spot after back-to-back poor showings in the PA Derby and BC Classic.

Neck ‘n Neck is my new number one after a pair of sharp wins in the Indiana Derby and Ack Ack.

1. Neck ‘n Neck (Flower Alley) – Exits back-to-back wins in G2 Indiana Derby (95 BSF) and G3 Ack Ack (98 BSF). He loves Churchill Downs and is a logical threat in the upcoming G1 Clark ‘Cap.

2. Paynter (Awesome Again) – Gave Union Rags a run for his money in the Test of Champions and looked great capturing his first graded stakes in the Haskell. Hopefully his well-documented health issues are behind him and he may return next year if all is well.

3. Bourbon Courage – He put together a trio of strong efforts in the G2 West Va. Derby (2nd), G2 Super Derby (1st), and G2 Indiana Derby (2nd). The aforementioned Clark is probably next.

4. Unbridled’s Note (Unbridled’s Song) – G3 Eddie D (92 BSF) winner gamely landed the place in the G1 BC Turf Sprint. Asmussen’s late blooming sprinter handles turf and dirt.

5. Nonios (Pleasantly Perfect) – Haskell place finisher was also second best in the G1 Awesome Again at SA on 9-29.  He ended up a respectable 6th of 12 in the BC Classic.

6. Dullahan (Even The Score) – Ran his Polytrack record to a perfect 3-for-3 in the Pacific Classic but never picked up his feet in his last two G1 turf starts (Jamaica, BC Turf).

7. Alpha (Bernardini) – Jim Dandy/Travers hero tailed off badly in last pair (PA Derby, BC Classic). He clearly does his best work in NY and his long campaign has seemingly caught up with him.

8. Trinniberg (Teuflesberg) – 7f specialist jumped up and won the BC Sprint (108 BSF) at almost 14-1, beating fellow 3yo The Lumber Guy. The fleet colt is based at Calder and will probably show up at the Gulf this winter.

9. The Lumber Guy – G1 Vosburgh winner proved that effort vs. older was no fluke with a game place finish in the BC Sprint. He is supposed to hang around in SoCal and compete in the G1 Malibu at SA on opening day (12-26).

10. Jimmy Creed (Distorted Humor) – Mandella’s $900k purchase rallied for the show vs. salty older sprinters in G1 SA Sprint Championship on 10-6. I knew he lost the BC Sprint after the draw (finished 9th from post 2) and he is probably a major player in the 7f Malibu if he goes there as expected.
