2011 Belmont Stakes Profile: Ruler On Ice

Ruler On Ice is sliding in under the radar for the 2011 Belmont Stakes but is he a legitimate threat at Big Sandy?

Kelly Breen’s overachieving gelding finished a flat 5th as the favorite in his sprint bow at Monmouth last summer but he hasn’t done much wrong since.

Ruler On Ice broke his maiden in the Delaware Park slop second time out and returned to action with a good 2nd in an inner dirt route at Aqueduct in early February. He broke through the entry level barrier at Parx less than three weeks later and landed the show in the Sunland Derby March 27.

Once again he gained stretch ground when last seen in the Federico Tesio at Pimlico and drilled a five furlong gate bullet at Monmouth Park on June 4 in preparation for the Belmont Stakes.

Bettors looking for longshots to fill out their Belmont Stakes exotics could do worse than Ruler On Ice but a victory seems like a stretch.

Hasn’t done a whole lot right either.

    • I don’t think Ruler On Ice is a grade one animal and probably belongs in races like the Ohio Derby but he has finished 1-2-3 in five straight with more than $166,000 in earnings. Can’t blame connections for taking a shot in a wide open 3yo year.
